Monday Morning Musing: Singing Along with Mitch

When I was a child, I often spent the weekend with my maternal grandmother, my Nanny. After my grandfather died, when I was 7, I think we were especially good company for one another. We would often walk to the A& P grocery store (up the alley, turn left, down half a block) where she would buy groceries for our dinner and an Archie comic book for me. After dinner, when we'd cleaned up and done the dishes, we would turn on the television to watch Sing Along with Mitch, (or maybe it was just The Mitch Miller Show). Nanny had several of his albums, and I remember that the song lyrics were printed on the back cover. We would sing along loudly and laugh at some of the ridiculous phrases. I'll go home and get my panties, you go home and get your scanties, and away we'll go.... You hold her hand and she holds yours and that's a very good sign, that she's your tootsie wootsie, in the good ol. summertime.

Scanties! Tootsie Wootsie! Hilarious!

I think of my Nanny almost daily, but especially in the good ol' summertime or on the weekend or when I'm humming a song and realize it's one of Mitch Miller's classics. If you know me well you know what a huge role she played in my life, and still does. She was a tootsie wootsie of the very best kind.
