August 30, 2021

Columbus, Ohio

The last few weeks, or maybe most of August, we've endured typical midwestern summer weather. Hot, humid days with pop-up thunderstorms from time to time. I actually enjoy the thunderstorms, but the heat and humidity are starting to wear on me a bit. The fireflies have even gone dark. I'm ready for autumn which is, in my opinion, the most splendid of the seasons.

The poet Lenore Hetrick might have been having some of the same feelings when she wrote her poem "Summer Must Go."

Summer Must Go

Summer has lingered a little too long,

The grass and the trees wear a rusty look,

The calendar cries the last day of August,

And so say the leaves that float down the brook.

The mists hang low in the morning hours,

And the smell of harvest grows more strong.

The summer cries the last day of August -

And summer has lingered a little too long.

~Lenore Hetrick
