It’s hard to imagine that libraries and classic books are actually under attack in this country these days. Some of my fondest and earliest memories are of going to the library, checking out a stack of books, and taking them home to relish for the week or two until we could next go to the library again. Come to think of it, some of my fondest and most recent memories are of the same.
Next week we plan to go check out (see what I did there?) the library here in Gig Harbor. I can’t wait to see how they set up the book displays and what newspapers they keep out for patrons to sit and read.
Libraries are a sign. They are a sign of an educated and curious people. They are a sign of democracy that can hold multiple things as true at the same time. They are a sign of free and equal access to knowledge. What then, could there possibly be to fear?
Today, I am thankful for libraries.
This is the former Pekin (Illinois) Public Library, where some of my fondest childhood memories took place
